American Landscapes

September 28 - January 11, 1997

Drawn from the Museum's Permanent Collection, the exhibition in the Groh Gallery will feature some of the favorite paintings of members, including Frederic E. Church's splendid Scene on Catskill Creek, which he painted in 1847. The artist would later select a site near this view for his home, Olana, a Persian-style villa situated on a hill overlooking the Hudson River.

Other paintings will include Nicholas R. Brewer's Haystacks, a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Frank DiPrima of Morristown, New Jersey; a small gem of a painting of the White Mountains by artist Benjamin Champney, given by late Dr. and Mrs. Albert R. Miller, Jr. of Baltimore; and Songo River, Maine by James Fairman, a gift of Dr. Richard Robbins of Baltimore.

An impressionistic view of Squam Lake, given by Mr. Richard H. Love of Chicago, shows the New Hampshire lake where the movie On Golden Pond was set. Other works include tonalist paintings such as Dusk by Bruce Crane and John Frederick Kensett's A Mountain Pool.. Covering a century of American landscape painting, the viewer may see a variety of works from the 1828 romantic painting by James Peale to post-impressionist landscapes, such as The Blue Ridge by Frank S. Chase.
