Two American Art Books Published by Art Institute of Chicago This Fall (1998)

For the first time in its long history, the Art Institute of Chicago is publishing a catalogue highlighting its extensive collection of American art, entitled American Arts at The Art Institute of Chicago: From Colonial Times to World War I. This landmark publication features 200 of the museum's finest American works, accompanied by short essays incorporating new research written by Judith A. Barter, Field-McCormick Curator of American Arts at the Art Institute; Kimberly Rhodes, Assistant Professor at Hollins College, Roanoke, Virginia; and Seth A. Thayer, former Assistant Curator for American Decorative Arts at the Art Institute; with contributions by Andrew J. Walker, Research Assistant in the Department of American Arts at the Art Institute. For anyone interested in American art, this is an indispensable guide to a great collection. The volume is 360 pages long and features 340 illustrations (220 in color, 120 duotone). It will be available in hardcover for $65.00 in December 1998.

In conjunction with this fall's major exhibition Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman, the Art Institute, in association with Harry N. Abrams, Inc., is publishing a catalogue featuring the works of American artist Mary Cassatt (1844-1926). The only American invited to exhibit with the French Impressionists, Cassatt was recognized in her lifetime as one of the United States' most important artists. The exhibition, which opens to the public on October 13, 1998, and remains on view through January 10, 1999, brings together nearly 100 of the artist's most beautiful and compelling paintings, pastels, drawings, and prints. The generously illustrated catalogue accompanying the exhibition, also entitled Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman, is edited by Judith A. Barter, Field-McCormick Curator of American Arts at the Art Institute and organizer of the exhibition, with essays contributed by Ms. Barter, Erica E. Hirshler, George T. M. Shackelford, Kevin Sharp, Harriet K. Stratis, and Andrew J. Walker. The book will be available in hardcover for $60.00 and softcover for $24.95; ISBN 0-8109-4089-2.
