George G. King: Director of The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

At the time of original publication of this article, January 17, 1999, George G. King was director of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico, succeeding Peter Hassrick. Formerly executive director of the Katonah Museum of Art in Katonah, New York, for ten years, King headed up the Museum's fund raising efforts resulting in a successful $5.3 million capital campaign, endowment and operating budget.

Exhibitions of note include Friends & Family: Portraiture in the World of Florine Stetheimer; Against the Stream: Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko in the '30s; Pavel Tchelitchew: The Landscape of the Body and Object as Insight: Japanese Buddhist Art and Ritual. During his tenure there, the Museum gained accreditation from the American Association of Museums (1995) and the operating budget grew from $250,000 to $1,000,000 in eight years.

Before his appointment to Katonah, King held several positions at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City over a six-year period, including director of programs and special events coordinator.

George King was born in Mexico and raised in Africa, Europe and the U.S. He attended Bennington College in New York and the Maryland Institute College of Art, earning his BFA there in art history and painting. King's own special interests are in 20th century art and photography as evidenced in exhibitions he has curated and over-seen during his career such as Changing Horizons: Landscape on the Eve of the Millennium and The Photography of Lourdes Almeida.

King has served as panelist on a number of arts councils, including New York State Council on the Arts, Westchester Arts Council and New York State Council for the Humanities. From 1992 to 1998, he served as a board member of the Westchester Arts Council and co-chair of the council's Affiliate Task Force Committee.

George King and his wife, Sarah, have two children, Marina and Harry.
