More Than One: Prints and Portfolios from Center Street Studio, Boston
Notre Dame de Namur University's Wiegand Gallery will present "More Than One: Prints and Portfolios from Center Street Studio, Boston," September 12 - October 18, 2003. The show includes a selection of monotypes, editioned prints, and portfolios by 20 artists created at Center Street Studio during its first 14 years. The works range from narrative and poetic in content, to purely abstract or conceptual explorations of themes.
Artist and master printer James Stroud founded Center Street Studio in Boston in 1984. He believes in the importance of maintaining direct relationships with the artists as he serves as the catalyst for the artist's creation. "The work that I am publishing reflects the plurality of contemporary art," says Mr. Stroud. "The best of art should be a reflection of the culture and society that produced the art. I find this in a range of work, from realism to abstraction, and I like to think Center Street embodies a reflection of our time."
Mr. Stroud invites artists whose work he respects and finds interesting to Center Street. He has worked with many of the country's leading artists such as John Walker, Lester Johnson, Kiki Smith, and Nell Blame.
Artist Charles Ritchie has said, "What is special about Center Street, and makes it very different from the larger studios, is the give and take working one-on-one with Jim (Stroud) in his workshop .... The moderate-scale presses and the private atmosphere that surrounds working back-and-forth directly with Jim are key elements."
There will be an opening reception on Sunday, September 28 from 2-4 p.m. Mr. Stroud will give a print making lecture demonstration on Tuesday, September 30 at 3 p.m. in the NDNU Madison Art Center print shop. Admission to both the exhibit and demonstration is free.
A 64-page catalog is available at the exhibition.
