Marge Moorhouse and Her Circle of Friends

May 9 - June 8, 2003

The Noyes Museum of Art, the art museum of South Jersey, opens a new exhibition of works by artist Marge Moorhouse and her protégés, entitled "Marge Moorhouse and Her Circle of Friends." The exhibit, which runs from May 3 to June 8, 2003, features the New Jersey coastal scenes, landscapes, still-lifes and florals that are Moorhouse's favorite subjects. Other artists whose works are exhibited are Kathy Johnston, Erin Endicott, Linda Gaszi, Margaret Henderson and Doris Scott. The opening reception will be held at the museum on Saturday, May 17 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. A special tour for museum members commences at 3:30 p.m.

Born and raised in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia, Marge Moorhouse has resided in South Jersey for many years. She attended the Fleischer Art School and the Philadelphia Museum School, now Philadelphia College of Art. After a career in commercial art and time spent raising a family, Moorhouse returned to her love of painting watercolors in the 1970s. Her home studio and frame shop, formerly operated by her late husband, is located on the banks of the Mullica River at Chestnut Neck, offering inspirational views and an environment for sharing her love for and skill in watercolors.

"Marge and her students, many of whom have now developed reputations in their own right, are important contributors to the visual arts of southern New Jersey," said museum curator A. M. Weaver. "Our presentation of regional artists is in keeping with the vision of the museum's founders," she continued.

Programs associated with the exhibition include a silk scarf painting workshop for youth and adults on Saturday, May 24, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and a workshop on watercolor painting by Marge Moorhouse on Saturday, May 31 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. All levels of experience are welcomed. Alex Alessi will lead the silk scarf workshop. A $15 fee includes materials. Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies to the watercolor workshop. The fee is $7 per person. Funding for the museum is provided in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State; the New Jersey Historical Commission/Department of State; the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation; the Odessa F. and Henry D. Kahrs Charitable Trust; the Mr. and Mrs. Fred Winslow Noyes Foundation; and, other generous contributors.
